Decisions, Decisions

I'm sitting here this morning thinking on all the decisions we have to make each and every single day. The decision to get up and go, or hit your snooze button one more time. The decision to eat a healthy breakfast, or to just have coffee. What to wear, how to get where you are going. Endless decisions everyday. Small ones, important ones, life changing ones, meaningless-but-to-you decisions.
I saw in the news yesterday that on May 14th, 2008 the U.S. government made the decision to recognize the polar bear as a "threatened" species, now if I am not mistaken isn't that one step away from "endangered"?
Well, yesterdays news was to inform us that the Bush administration made a decision, they are taking new steps to secure oil for us greedy Americans. The fish and wildlife services auctioned off $2.5 billion worth of contracts to seven oil companies, only Shell and Conoco-Phillips were named specifically. These oil companies are going to search for oil off the NW coast of Alaska. These seven companies were given free reign to 'annoy and potentially harm' the polar bears and pacific walruses in their searches. Over 10% of the polar bears living in the Arctic live in this area. Just when you think we are almost rid of this idiot.
This mornings news was equally disturbing, the first headline I clicked on was 'Police kill man who beat child to death'. Apparently on a stretch of road in CA an elderly couple saw a pick up truck pulled to the side of the road facing the wrong way, as they drove by they stopped. Why? because they were witnessing a man beat a toddler of about 1-2 years of age, brutally beating and stomping were some of the words used in the article. Other people stopped, and soon the police came and had to shoot the man dead to make him quit beating the child. The child was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Now the officer on the scene says that some of the witnesses tried to stop him but their tries were ineffective, he pushed them off and continued. This whole story makes me sick, it is hard to judge sitting here, far from there, but really no one could stop this guy? No one had a plan, hey you grab him and I'll get the kid? really?
Decisions, that how this got started. I could have made the decision to read a different news article, some happy fluff that clogs up 95% of our news channels. But when I read the news I want to hear about the bad stuff. It reminds me that bad shit happens. It's easy to forget that my problems are not the be all end all. It's real easy to forget that I am lucky. That I have it real good. It's easy to forget that I could make a difference. Just by making a decision.
We are all so content to mind our own business, it doesn't affect me type of attitude. But in the end it does affect us all. Yeah, in November we get to pick a new administration but how much damage has the current one caused us? How long before the new administration or the one after it cleans up the messes caused by this one? All of these seemingly endless decisions affect us all. It's time to start caring about them.
